What the Hell Has Happened to Teen TV Shows?

I got the shocking news that Glee was doing Rocky Horror. I am disgusted by this. Rocky Horror is supposed to be rock n’ roll, badass, and sexual, not whatever the hell kind of crap Glee is. That aside, I think the Glee GQ photos were very wrong. They may be old enough to have those pictures taken of them, but preteens watch their show. It’s just as wrong as Miley dancing on a fucking stripper pole at the kid’s choice awards.

That aside, I’ve come to realize something: after the 90’s teen shows have gone down hill and gotten overly sexed up.

What teen shows we have now: Glee, Gossip Girl, Secret Life of the American Teenager

What I remember watching in the 90’s and early 00’s as a preteen: Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Clueless, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Daria (which I discovered a bit later)

Sabrina was awesome, it was just about the hilarity she endured being a witch in the mortal realm. I don’t remember much about Clueless, but there was one episode where a girl got pregnant, and they gave a  “use protection or don’t have sex” speech at the end of the episode. Buffy was more about killing vamps and other monsters than anything else. Daria had some mention of sex, but it was aired on MTV, so that was to be expected. The other shows were all on network TV.

Gossip Girl is a bunch of sluts sleeping around, Secret Life of the American Teenager is also sex centered. Why the hell is sex the focus of these shows? I don’t know the entire deal with Glee, but the creator commented on the GQ shoot saying he wanted to push sexuality or something like that >.>

I think that this is terrible, and that there are no more talented writers anymore. You have no skills as a writer if you need to resort to sex instead of an actual story line.

I agree. I grew up watching tv shows that were popular because of their content, not because they had some scandalous/sexy plot. I do admit that some episodes of Buffy were pretty raunchy. 😛 I only realized that after rewatching it this past summer. XD I’ve never watched Daria, but I just wiki’d it, and I think it sounds interesting. Especially with the whole non-mainstream theme. I might actually download the episodes and watch them while I do work! : ) And I also googled Glee’s GQ shoot. Not cool for preteens. =/

i know what you mean about the raunchy buffy episodes, but the sexyness wasn’t the main focus. the main focus was killing stuff.. and buffy wasn’t weak and helpless like bella -_-

LOL. This may be the reason why I don’t watch TV anymore. Although, I do admit I like Big Bang Theory & I’m starting to have a liking to some of the Office seasons.

i like those shows too ^^ but their target audience isn’t teenagers.. and i will admit i think some of the sex in big bang theory is ridiculous. when you have a show about geeks you don’t want to see them get laid >.>
